About us
# The UK Leader In Pure Water Filtration
Origin Aqua is a team of committed chemists, biologists and engineers, who believe in harnessing the power of science and nature in place of chemicals.
Timeline
## Learn how it all started and where we are today.
Jan 2009
### **2009 - Natural Swimming Ponds**
We began by designing and building **plant-based natural swimming ponds**, where plants and gravel beds cleaned the water instead of chemicals.
Jan 2009
Mar 2013
### **2013 - Microbial breakthrough**
Working with microbiologists, we discovered that it was the **bacteria in the gravel**, not the plants themselves, doing most of the work – removing nutrients like phosphate, nitrogen and carbon so algae and pathogens couldn’t thrive.
Mar 2013
Apr 2015
### **2015 - Proving the science**
We established partnerships with leading pool builders to enhance our outreach and promote eco-friendly swimming solutions.
Apr 2015
Jun 2017
### **2017 - 2024 - Improving the science from ponds to pools**
We evolved the concept into a compact system that fits inside a standard pool plant room – **no plants needed**. Thousands of R&D hours and millions **of investment** went into developing mineral+biome®, which can now be installed on new and existing pools, indoor or outdoor.
Jun 2017
Dec 2025
### **2025 - Launching mineral+biome® globally**
Origin Aqua has launched mineral+biome® in the UK and beyond as a **chemical-free, biological filtration system** that uses **around 50% less energy and 50% less water** than traditional pool systems, while delivering spa-quality mineral water.

The acronym SPA stands for ‘Salus Per Aquam’, which loosely translates as ‘Health through Water’. But there is a deeper meaning – Salus was originally the Roman Goddess for safety and wellbeing (welfare, health and prosperity) of both the individual and the state. And it was only latterly (180BC) she became more a protector of personal health.
At Origin Aqua, we aspire to be like Salus - a protector of people’s health and the environment through the provision of incredible water for an unparalleled swimming experience.
> “We love the feel of the natural water. We use our pool all the time for fitness and fun and I’m sure if we’d gone with a chemical pool we wouldn’t use it half as much.”

> “Water that is natural, and not full of chemicals, is water worth investing in.”
