No disinfection chemicals. No chemical residuals in the water.
When we describe Mineral+Biome® as a chemical-free pool system, we mean two specific things: no disinfection chemicals are used at any stage, and no chemical residuals are present in the swimming water.
What we do not use
Mineral+Biome® does not use chlorine (in any form), bromine, salt chlorination, copper or silver ionisation, ozone, UV disinfection, or any biocide or disinfection chemical.
Pathogens are eliminated by biological nutrient removal. Remove the phosphate, nitrogen and carbon pathogens need to survive, and they cannot grow. No disinfection required. This has been independently peer-reviewed and published in Nature Water, confirming 99.9% pathogen elimination without any disinfection chemicals.
What we do use
Phosphate management agents
Small quantities of phosphate-binding agents are dosed automatically as part of the filtration process. These bind to phosphates and organic matter and are removed entirely during backwash. They leave no residual in the swimming water whatsoever.
Mineral supplements
Beneficial minerals are added at parts-per-billion concentrations, comparable to trace minerals in spring water or tap water. The carrier is food-grade acetic acid (the same compound as culinary vinegar). These contribute to the soft, odourless water quality Mineral+Biome® is known for.
Why the distinction matters
Chlorine works by remaining present in the water continuously at 1–3 parts per million. That residual is intentional. Mineral+Biome® works differently: the biological system removes the conditions pathogens need to survive, and trace maintenance agents bind to their targets and leave the water entirely. The swimming water contains no ongoing chemical treatment. No smell, no irritation, no stinging.
A note on terminology
We are aware that “chemical-free” is technically imprecise. When we use it, we mean free from disinfection chemicals and free from chemical residuals in the swimming water. If you have questions about the system’s maintenance protocol, speak to our team.
